Cookie Clicker has more strategic depth than its casual exterior suggests. New players spend cookies inefficiently and delay the exponential growth that makes the game feel magical. Here's how to build an optimal cookie empire from scratch.
The Early Game — First 30 Minutes
Click the cookie constantly in the first few minutes to buy your first Cursor, then your first Grandma. After that, focus on buying the cheapest building that isn't already at a count of ten. The early game priority is buildings in this order: Cursor, Grandma, Farm, Mine, Factory. Don't save up for expensive buildings when you can buy cheaper ones immediately — the continuous production compounds faster than you think.
The 10x Rule
Most Cookie Clicker players follow the 10x rule: spend no more than ten times your current cookies per second on a single purchase. If you're making 100 cookies per second, the maximum reasonable purchase is something costing 1000 cookies. This prevents the mistake of buying one expensive building and then having no income to build further.
Prioritize Upgrades Over Buildings
Upgrades are generally more efficient than new buildings, especially in the mid game. When an upgrade becomes available that doubles the production of your most numerous building, buy it before buying more buildings. The math works out strongly in favor of upgrades: doubling the output of 50 farms costs less than buying 50 more farms, and accomplishes the same result.
Golden Cookies
Golden cookies appear randomly and provide powerful temporary bonuses: multiplied production, cookie chains, or temporary click power boosts. Click them every time they appear — missing golden cookies is the single biggest inefficiency in Cookie Clicker. If you're playing actively, keep a browser tab visible so you'll notice them. The Frenzy bonus (production times 7 for 77 seconds) is particularly powerful and worth watching for.
When to Ascend (Prestige)
Ascension resets most of your progress in exchange for Heavenly Chips, which provide permanent multipliers through the Prestige upgrade tree. The general advice for your first ascension is to wait until you can get at least 200-400 Heavenly Chips in a single ascension. The permanent bonuses from those chips make your next run several times faster than your first, quickly outpacing what you could accomplish by not ascending.
The Prestige Tree Priority
After ascending, buy Heavenly Cookies first (adds 10% to cookie production permanently), then Legacy (lets you start with your Cursor upgrades immediately), then the Starter Kit upgrades that give you buildings from the start of your next run. These dramatically speed up the early game of every subsequent run.
